Wine Barrel Head Lazy Susan

from $149.00

Surprisingly, wine barrels and barrel heads are never glued. They are held in place by notches at the top and bottom of the barrel staves (chimes), and locked in place by the barrel’s metal hoops.

Barrel lids often use dowels, a tongue and groove or nails to align the individual pieces of the barrel head. Reeds are often inserted in between the individual boards which swell up when in contact with the barrels contents, expanding and creating a water tight seal. When hoops are removed from a barrel, it will collapse immediately into a disorganized pile on the ground.

To create your lazy susan or serving tray, the barrel head is first carefully marked for reference, pried apart into its individual pieces and then cleaned of nails and bamboo reeds. each exposed edge is run through a jointer to insure a flat bonding surface for the glue joint. Food grade water proof glue is then applied to each joint of the barrel head and squeezed with equal pressure clamps which create downward pressure keeping the lid completely flat.

After the lid is removed from the clamps it is re-cut to size, carefully sanded to preserve the natural wine stain patina and any existing vineyard stamps.

Metal barrel hoops are then cut to the specific diameter of the lid and carefully fastened to the lids perimeter with rustic pyramid head screws. A high quality rotating disk and hardwood base are then attached to the barrel lid. The Lazy Susan is then protected with several treatments of food grade mineral oil and butchers wax.

Available in 18 or 20 inches and in four styles, Natural Oak, Red Wine Patina, Toasted or with an original Vineyard Logo.
